St. James Church
St. James Church, Burnopfield is your Parish Church if you live in Burnopfield, The Leazes, The Lintz, The Hobson and Crookgate Bank and Dipton.Corona Virus News
Important Up Date.
In view of the National Lockdown and rising infection rates locally as well as nationally, reluctantly we have decided to suspend in person worship on Sundays. We shall also remain closed for individual private prayer.
As you will appreciate this was a difficult decision, as we say, reluctantly taken. We are convinced, however, that at this time of national emergency, it is the right decision for us to gather online to worship. We will continually monitor the situation and review this decision.
LENT 2021.
A message from the Rev. Andy :
Hello to you all,
I am once again hoping that this message finds you well – and again offering the chance of a chat on the phone for those I have not had the opportunity to speak to during the lockdown (unbelievably nearly 12 months now) due to not having a number for you.
The main reason for this message is to inform you of the provision for Lent within the Benefice – which is very much shaped by the provision that the Diocese of Durham is offering, this year on the theme of racial justice. Not surprisingly perhaps, given that we are in a National lockdown and being asked to Stay at Home this provision is given online. And it comes in three forms, two of which are centrally run/produced one a more relaxed local offer from myself and Ali. These provisions are the following.
1.The Diocese of Durham Lent Course “Becoming One in Christ: A Journey Through the Lens of Racial Justice”
This is a 5 session course being run centrally by the Diocese on Tuesday evenings from 7-8pm starting on the 23rd February 2021 via Zoom. In order to attend there is a need to register using the following link https://forms.gle/X85cz5y9276SQN24A provided by the Diocese and this needs to be done by Friday 19th Feb.
2. The Diocese of Durham Religious Resource centre are hosting a series of webinars including reflections and discussions on Race, Racism and Anti-Semitism and based around the lived experiences of those who will be speaking each evening. They are held every Thursday evening during Lent beginning on Thursday 18th of February. For more information, bookings, or recordings of these webinars, please complete this form: click here.
3. Finally as I suggested Ali and I also thought it might be nice to try and have a catch up with those who can by Zoom during Lent. So we will be having a simple “coffee morning” by Zoom every Saturday in Lent at 10am beginning on the 20th February. Just grab yourself a brew and we will get together for a chat. If you want to attend then email me and I will send you the link on the day before.
As we have also suggested you might like to try a book for Lent – and Ali recommends The Word in the Wilderness: A poem a day for Lent and Easter by Malcolm Guite and published by Canterbury Press.
Anyway I do hope that you will join in with any or all of these things for Lent.
And again I do hope that you and family are coping okay at the moment as we make our way through yet another lockdown with Covid-19.
Needing assistance at this difficult time ?
It can be a difficult time for some people during this period of national lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Church of England 24-hour telephone line, Daily Hope offering music, prayers and reflections on 0800 804 8044 may help .
Please also make a note of the Samaritans helpline 116 123.
Live Streaming in the Benefice of Tanfield with Burnopfield and Dipton .
As well as the usual Live Streamed Online Eucharist Service which is online at 10.00am each Sunday, please do join us on our Facebook pages for any or all of these services or times of prayer:
Regular Weekly Online Services and Prayer
- 7pm on a Sunday – a Service of Compline alternating between the Benefice Facebook pages.
- 5pm on a Tuesday – A Service of Evening Prayer on the St Margaret’s Tanfield Facebook page
- 5pm on Thursday – A Service of Evening Prayer on the St James Burnopfield Facebook page
Other Times of Prayer or Worship.
Look out for details of when these will take place on Facebook
- Meditation Class – usually weekly and at varying times on the St James Burnopfield Facebook page
- Godly Play/Messy Church – usually monthly at 3pm on a Sunday on the St James Burnopfield .
Foodbank Donations.
Thank you to everyone who is still giving to the Foodbank. Having spoken to the Foodbank at Stanley, whilst they can and do use any fresh food that is donated, they really need canned goods at this time, such is the demand. If you do find yourself able to give anything, then please do so – you can if you wish leave it at the Vicarage by arrangement, or we could perhaps come and collect it – again in a socially distanced manner.

In the letter released today, the Archbishops asked us to hold Sunday 22nd of March as a day of prayer and action at this difficult time for our country. One action is that we hopefully light a candle and place it in our window at 7pm and stop for a moment to hold in our prayers those who are sick or anxious. If you don't wish to light a candle as an alternative you might wish to print off the poster and display it in you home.Click here for candle of hope poster

This year we will be holding a Remembrance Service of Holy Communion at 10.45am in St James’ Church in Burnopfield, including an Act of Remembrance at 11am. However please note that due to COVID-19 and the need to socially distance, the Church capacity is vastly reduced. If you wish to come you will therefore need to phone and book a place with the Vicar in the week beforehand (beginning from Thursday at midday) as has been happening for all our services in Church since opening again for worship in July. Please also note due to COVID restrictions we will not be able to receive any wreaths or flags to place at the altar as part of the service this year. However, as part of our Remembrance, we will be tying red and white ribbons (for Remembrance and peace) to our Church railings during the week before and after Remembrance Sunday, which we encourage you to join in with. We will also be streaming an Act of Remembrance to the St James Burnopfield Facebook page at 2pm on Remembrance Sunday as well. Please speak to the Vicar for more details of any of this.

Having reassessed our Risk Assessments and set up etc during lockdown we have further decided that we are able to accommodate 18 individuals or households within such a service, and that to aid in keeping ourselves safe, there will be the slight change in that each of these 18 pew places will now have a bottle of hand sanitiser available within them for use before and after receiving communion. Please note that what has not changed regarding attending a service in a "COVID-19 secure manner "is the need to maintain social distancing and avoid mixing with others at all times ,sanitise upon entry and exit to the Church building ,bring and wear a mask/face covering that covers your face and nose throughout your time in the building .Provide your details for the reasons of Test and Trace .Most crucially it is still required that you phone to book a place to attend the service. I apologise once again for the late nature of this email, however please do call if you wish to attend the service.

As mentioned last week, the usual World Day of Prayer service prepared by the Christian Women of Vanuatu, was due to be held this year on Friday the 5th of March. Please do check the World Day of Prayer website to see what is planned online for the day itself and beyond. Adele, who is our representative in Burnopfield, has been giving copies of the service booklets to those who have requested one - and is happy to do so if anyone else is interested. She also has details if anyone should wish to donate to the World Day of Prayer, although this can also be done via the website https://www.wwdp.org.uk/wdp-2021/ . Do get in touch if you wish – but either way perhaps hold Friday as a time of prayer for Christians across the world; and not least those from Vanuatu
